Welcome to Klausen

Picturesque old town, vineyards on the slopes, views of the Säben Monastry - even Albrecht Dürer was impressed

“The Great Fortune” is what Albrecht Dürer’s famous engraving Nemesis is also called. In the background, a small town appears: Klausen. The fertile landscape surrounding the town inspired Dürer and still shapes Klausen’s identity today as an artists’ town. It is officially one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia – the most beautiful towns in Italy. And with good reason: narrow streets, a setting right on the Eisack River and Säben Monastery rising high above, rewarding visitors with sweeping views over the valley. The medieval charm unfolds as you stroll through the town centre, past historic façades, winding alleys and quiet squares. Arrive, slow down and enjoy – a place made for carefree days.

Alongside culture, wine also plays a central role. For generations, winemakers on the surrounding slopes have focused on white wines that rank among Italy’s finest. Thanks to its central location, Klausen is also an ideal starting point for hikes and active tours. Follow the wine trail through the hills of Leitach or take the circular route up to Säben Monastery - here, that feeling of great fortune suddenly feels very close.
