This varied circular hike connects some of the best-known sights around Barbian. Starting in the village centre with its distinctive leaning church tower, the route leads to the spectacular Barbian Waterfalls, which descend in several cascades over a rock face approximately 200 metres high.
The hike then continues to Briol. The local inn is a remarkable example of New Objectivity architecture in the Alps and was transformed by artist Hubert Lanzinger into a complete architectural work of art. The route continues to Three Churches, an extraordinary ensemble of three interconnected chapels built on the site of an ancient spring sanctuary, before returning to Barbian.
Refreshments are available in Barbian, Briol and Three Churches. This long circular hike follows woodland trails, forest roads and some steep and narrow mountain paths. Good fitness, sure-footedness and sturdy hiking boots are required.
The circular hike starts in the village square of Barbian. From there, follow the signposted Waterfall Trail, first to the Lower Barbian Waterfall and then to the Upper Waterfall. The ascent between the two waterfalls follows a steep path with numerous steps. Some sections are narrow and partially secured.
From the Upper Waterfall, follow trail no. 34 uphill. Then join trail no. 27, which leads through woodland and meadows to Briol. The architecturally distinctive Gasthof Briol offers a suitable place to stop for refreshments.
From Briol, continue along trail no. 4 to Three Churches. Further refreshment stops are available near the historic church complex at Gasthof Bad Dreikirchen and Messnerhof.
For the return journey, initially follow the woodland trail marked no. 6 towards Barbian. Then turn onto trail no. 3 and follow the village road back to the starting point in the village centre.
Trail conditions: The tour follows paved sections, woodland and meadow paths, forest roads and narrow, steep and partially secured mountain trails. The section between the waterfalls and the subsequent ascent require sure-footedness and a head for heights. Sturdy hiking boots, good fitness and sufficient water are essential. Stones, steps and exposed roots can become very slippery in wet conditions. Check the current trail conditions and the opening times of the restaurants before starting.
