To the Stöffelhütte in the Alps of Villanders

Hike through the vast, flat moorland landscape on the Villanderer Alm, with constantly open long-distance views of the elongated Dolomites panorama.

The circular hike starts at the Gasser Hütte at an elevation of 1,756 metres. From there, follow trail no. 6/15 alongside the reservoir towards the Mair-in-Plun-Hütte. At the signpost, turn right onto trail no. 24, which initially crosses a wooden boardwalk and leads to the beautifully situated “Am Rinderplatz” alpine inn at 1,799 metres.

Continue westwards along forest road no. 23 until you return to alpine road no. 6/15. Follow it gently uphill towards the north to reach the Stöfflhütte at 2,057 metres.

From the Stöfflhütte, trail no. 15A leads northwards to the Gfohler Alm at 2,122 metres. Turn left onto trail no. 1A and continue to Scholer Bild at 2,107 metres. At the junction, follow trail no. 1 southwards across the extensive wet moorland. The route runs partly along wooden boardwalks and partly along a moorland path marked with wooden posts.

The trail eventually reaches forest road no. 6 at 2,080 metres. Those wishing to extend the hike can turn right towards the Pfroder Alm and continue to the Totenkirchl chapel. For the direct return route, follow the alpine road downhill towards the east to the Mair-in-Plun-Hütte at 1,860 metres and then continue back to the starting point at the Gasser Hütte.
