The Gaisjoch is known as the mountain of the chamois and offers a varied circular hike with extensive views and alpine experiences. Whether you are walking along the ridge or stopping at one of the mountain huts, the tour combines a sporting challenge with an immersive experience in nature.
You start at the parking lot in the Altfasstal valley near Meransen and follow the signs to the Großberghütte. From there, trail no. 15B leads uphill across the west-facing grassy slope.
After a gradual ascent, you reach trail no. 13A, which leads up to the ridge. From there, follow trail no. 13 to the summit of Gaisjoch at 2,641 metres.
The descent follows trail no. 13B down to the unserviced Walderjochalm. The route then continues to the Wieserhütte or the Pranterstadelhütte, where you can take a break.
From there, return either on foot along trail no. 15 through the Altfasstal valley or by bicycle rented from one of the huts, back to the parking lot.
From Mühlbach, take the SP149 and follow the well-signposted road towards Meransen. After about ten minutes, you will reach the village centre. From there, follow the signs to the left towards the Altfasstal. The paved road continues uphill past the church to the paid car park at the end of the valley, an ideal starting point for hikes in the surrounding area. Allow around 20–25 minutes for the drive from Mühlbach to the parking lot.
