Hike from Skihütte to the Rossalm mountain pasture and the Großer Gabler summit on the Plose (2,575 m). Early risers or not, most people wish to experience the magic moment of sunrise, basking under the first rays of the new day on a mountaintop. With the sun rising on the Dolomite peaks of the Geisler Group, the Aferer Geisler and the Peitlerkofel, there’s no doubt that getting up early was well worth the effort.
The small village Skihütte in Innerpalmschoß (1,900 m) is the starting point of the summit tour on the Großer Gabler. From here the ascent begins along trail no. 6 to the Rossalm (2,200 m). Keep to the right and cross the Schnatzergraben ditch on the farm track (trail no. 14: signposted Dolomiten Panoramaweg). There isn’t any real change in altitude before the fork in the track on to trail no. 7 on the left. The track on the wide grassy slope leads to the Gabler Biwak encampment (2,571 m) and a few steps further to the summit of the Großer Gabler (2,575 m). The descent is the same as the ascent on trail no. 7 to the Dolomiten Panoramaweg. At the crossing, follow trail no. 4 to the Schatzer Hütte mountain hut (2,004 m). The wide trail no. 8 leads back to the starting point. Necessary gear: a headlamp is essential, good footwear and warm, weatherproof clothing.
