This varied circular hike connects three of Barbian’s best-known sights: the leaning church tower in the village centre, the impressive Barbian Waterfalls and the historic Three Churches complex.
From the village, the route follows the Waterfall Trail to the Lower and then the Upper Waterfall. It then continues through woodland and via Matlid to Three Churches, where refreshments are available. The return route leads past the sports area and back to the centre of Barbian.
The tour follows paved sections, woodland trails and some steep mountain paths with numerous steps. Good fitness, sure-footedness and sturdy hiking boots are required. Stones, steps and exposed roots can become slippery in wet conditions.
The circular hike starts in the village square of Barbian. From there, walk south to Haus Urban at the end of the village. Turn onto the signposted Waterfall Trail and follow it to the alpine road.
Follow the alpine road uphill to the next bend and turn left. The route leads first to the Lower Barbian Waterfall and then to the Upper Waterfall. The ascent between the two waterfalls follows a steep path with numerous steps. Some sections are narrow and partially secured.
From the Upper Waterfall, follow trail no. 6 via Matlid to Three Churches. Refreshments are available near the historic church complex at Gasthof Bad Dreikirchen and Messnerhof.
For the return journey, follow trail no. 11 downhill. The route passes the sports area and then leads back to the starting point in the centre of Barbian.
Trail conditions:
The tour follows paved sections, woodland and meadow paths, as well as narrow, steep and partially secured mountain trails. The section between the two waterfalls requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. Sturdy hiking boots, good fitness and sufficient water are essential. Stones, steps and exposed roots can become very slippery in wet conditions. Check the current trail conditions and the opening times of the restaurants before starting.
