This varied circular hike leads from the centre of Barbian to the historic Three Churches complex. The route follows old paved paths, narrow woodland trails and forest roads through the peaceful landscape above the village. Along the way, there are recurring views of Barbian and the surrounding mountains.
Refreshments are available at Gasthof Bad Dreikirchen and Messnerhof in Three Churches. The return route leads through the forest via Feistegg and Wieserhof to the Waterfall Trail, which takes you back to the village centre.
This moderately difficult hike requires a good basic level of fitness and is also suitable for families with children who are accustomed to longer walks. Paved sections, woodland paths and exposed roots can become slippery when wet. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The route is not suitable for pushchairs. Check the opening times of the restaurants and churches in advance.
The circular hike starts in the village square of Barbian. From there, walk north to the Raiffeisen bank and then follow trails no. 3 and 11 uphill. At the end of the paved road, the route continues along an old paved path. After crossing another paved road, enter the forest.
Follow the well-maintained trail with marker no. 11 uphill to the sports area. From there, a forest road leads to Three Churches. Refreshments are available at Gasthof Bad Dreikirchen and Messnerhof near the historic church complex.
For the return journey, initially follow the woodland trail with marker no. 6. From Feistegg, continue along trail no. 3 to Wieserhof. From there, follow the road marked no. 6A to the alpine road.
Follow the alpine road downhill to the next junction. There, join the signposted Waterfall Trail, which leads back to the centre of Barbian.
